CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                          INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

This study is designed not only to impact broad based knowledge to marital homes but also to tackle the problems facing Home on the performance of Pupils. Home affects all round development of the student which includes: social, educational, emotional, vocational and mental aspect of the student. It is well known fact that parents contributes a lot to over all development of the Pupils. When there is instability in marriage, with lack of parental care which is very essential to the growth of children maladjustment in the Pupils sets in. Pupils who are in this condition are seen to be confused and stranded in life. This often leads to involving themselves in breaking the societal norms and values such as: stealing, drug addicts etc. Adebayo (2004).

According to Ajai and Ipaye (2007) Home affects the academic performance of children in schools. They demonstrated this by comparing stable home and Homes. It is observed that children from stable homes have higher grade or points.

This foundation has helped us to deepen understanding the cause of Home and its effect on children academic performance from the area of study. It has been found that children from Home are often worse off when compared with the children from stable home. This means that it is only when something goes wrong with the parents-child relationship, these seriously cause delinquency result. Abdullahi (2000).

There is a wide variety of view on Home also there is a considerable disagreement about the process by which divorce should be obtainable. People go into marriage just because they see others getting married without considering that it is not a bed of roses. The children of Home parents usually suffer many hardships since they lack the affectionate upbringing of both parents. Once the couples are separated, the children are thrown out of balance. They now lack full parental affection, and poor access to material needs.

In some cases if not most, the psychological effects may last a life time if the single parent is not very loving or caring and because of financial constraint the children’s future becomes very hopeless. The cases of Home in Gwagwalada Area Council of Federal Capital Territory, (Abuja) should not be in existence in any case rather there should be a strong happy married life for the couple in order to raise their children the way it should be.

The child’s home and his family offers the best education since his parents serve as teachers. The parents lay the foundation for the desired social moral, emotional, spiritual and intellectual well being of a child. The training a child receives from a home is of greatest importance in his/her total personality formation and his/her academic achievement as a student, it can also be observed that the pattern of life in the home (stable or broken) the economic and social status of the family in the community and many other conditions that gives the home a distinctive character can influence the achievement of student in school.

Abdulganiyu (1997), added that research have shown that children differs in various ways as a result of variables of their home background such as socio-economic status, parental attitude to school and child rearing practices. These home background variables are also found to be positively related to children’s academic achievement

Similarly, Giwa (1997) have investigated the factors within the children’s home background or family that affect their performances in school, variables such as socio-economic status, family size, birth order, parental attitude, child rearing practices, parental absence or presence have been found to affect social and intellectual learning experiences of children is schools. The is so because children are born with some psychological, emotional and intellectual needs such as need for love and security, the need for new experiences the need for praise and recognition and the need for responsibility. Many of these needs are not offered to the children of divorce or Homes which will influence their performances in schools. The extent to which these needs are met during the formative years of children between birth and the age of size or seven in the extent to which they enter school will equipped or ready to deal with the social and emotional aspect of schooling. Chiroma (2002).

Base on the observation above and in line with the assumption that economic and social future of many children in most localities is being undermined by cultural practices that promotes widespread divorce among couples and brought unnecessary hardship to the growing children. Adeleke (2007).

1.2     Statement of the Problem

In our society, children are sometimes exposed at an early age to all sort of dangers arising from malnutrition, diseases and various temptation of surviving due to absence of one or both of their parents life in unstable homes is observed to be associated with emotional stress that can impair intellectual development, thereby giving way for such children to grow up without being trained properly. However, absence of one or both parents deprives young children of the stable love, care, security and total support they have been accustomed to and tend to make children different in the eyes of the peer group. If children are asked where the missing parent is or they have a new parent to replace the missing parents, they become embarrassed and ashamed. They may also feel guilty and unwanted by the society, such stressful situation leads to psychological, emotional and intellectual imbalance in growing children. These subsequently result to quitting from school or poor academic check back.

Going through the background of the study, it has been noticed that the foundations of the family institution is generally being eroded as a result of constant Home which affects the family and the performance of children in most society including Nigeria. This occurrence therefore have necessitated the need to examine this social phenomenon by the extent to which Home affects, the performance of Pupils and the family.
